I Mental Health Fair Fuerteventura 2024
Parkinson’s disease, although most people know it as a neurodegenerative disease that affects a person’s ability to move, is also often associated with a mental disorder.
This disease affects individuals and their families on multiple levels and symptoms that are not always given as much attention, how exactly the mental health plan, and which, in many cases, affect day-to-day life in the same way as the more familiar symptoms do.
Among the most frequent mental symptoms in people with Parkinson’s are: depression (with effects of low psychophysical energy, apathy, pessimistic hopelessness), sleep disorder, anxiety, panic, insomnia, dementia, compulsive gambling, compulsive shopping, sex addiction, delusions of persecution, hallucinations, food compulsions, fears, obsessions and manias.
It is estimated that almost 80% of people with Parkinson’s suffer from serious mental and emotional problems and that 40% would require psychiatric or psychological care.
The first Mental Health Fair in Fuerteventura will take place on the 10th of October in Puerto del Rosario. Among the objectives of this initiative is to raise awareness and mobilize the population about mental health issues, ending the stigma that still remains with people suffering from these pathologies.
