At FuerteVida Parkinson No Limits, we see Fuerteventura’s natural environment not just as a breathtaking backdrop, but as a living gym for health, freedom, and well-being. Today, we are thrilled to announce the launch of ¡JUNTOS! (Together!), a new community project designed to unite physical health, emotional well-being, and social inclusion across our island.
This milestone has been made possible thanks to a €7,600 grant from the ”la Caixa” Foundation, delivered through the local outreach program of the CaixaBank branch in Corralejo. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to their entire team for their sensitivity, closeness, and trust in our association’s daily work.
From Surfing to Painting in the Water: The Activities of ¡JUNTOS!
The heart of ¡JUNTOS! is bringing rehabilitation outdoors so participants can experience the regenerating power of the ocean and Fuerteventura’s unique energy. The program is structured around four main areas of activity tailored for people living with Parkinson’s, neurodegenerative conditions, or disabilities, along with their families:
- Aquatic Psychomotricity and Painting in the Water: Coastal sessions that combine gentle gait re-education, therapeutic dance, and our unique technique of painting in the water using safe, hypoallergenic pigments. The natural buoyancy of the water relieves joints from gravity and fosters a wonderful sense of lightness and body control.
- Adapted Sports (Surfing, Kitesurfing, and Therapeutic Boxing): Intensive adapted surfing and kitesurfing days along the coasts of Corralejo and Costa Calma to train dynamic balance and strength in the waves, paired with weekly non-contact therapeutic boxing sessions designed to boost reflexes, coordination, and agility.
- Boat Therapy (Barca Terapia) by Catamaran: Open-sea excursions aboard a catamaran where the natural motion of the ocean helps engage core stability, complemented by guided therapeutic swimming, sensory snorkeling, and adapted stand-up paddleboarding (SUP).
- Art Therapy and Sound Therapy: Weekly creative workshops using rhythm, music, and artistic expression to help unlock movement, improve walking fluidity, and express emotions in a welcoming environment.
Bidirectional Inclusion: In the Water, We Are All Teammates
One of the most inspiring pillars of ¡JUNTOS! is our bidirectional inclusion model. During our beach sessions, on the surfboards, and in our art workshops, people living with Parkinson’s or disabilities participate side by side with local community members—family members, students, neighbors, and volunteers—on a level of complete equality.
When sharing a wave or a training session, the label of “patient” disappears, leaving only athletes, teammates, and friends. It is a powerful, hands-on way to break down social stigma, build lasting friendships, and overcome isolation.
Leaving No One Behind: Reaching Every Corner of Fuerteventura
We know how challenging travel across the island can be for those living far from urban centers. That is why ¡JUNTOS! prioritizes territorial cohesion: through our mobile outreach service, our team of professionals and volunteers will regularly bring therapies and equipment directly to towns and rural areas across Fuerteventura—including Pájara, Morro Jable, La Lajita, Gran Tarajal, Antigua, and inland villages—ensuring that where someone lives never limits their access to health and community.
Thank You for Walking by Our Side
A project of this scale is always a team effort. We sincerely thank the ”la Caixa” Foundation and the wonderful team at the CaixaBank branch in Corralejo for believing in the human and social value of ¡JUNTOS!, as well as our local partner organizations (including ADIVIA, ASOMASAMEN, and the island’s care centers) and our dedicated professionals and volunteers.
